McNair Academic student Aashirya Varma represented the school at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2026, one of the most prestigious pre-college science competitions in the world. Aashirya was McNair's sole representative at ISEF this year.
Aashirya's project, CoolSmart AI, explored how artificial intelligence can be used to improve the efficiency and sustainability of modern data centers. Using data analysis and machine learning techniques, the research examined strategies to optimize resource usage, reduce energy consumption, and minimize environmental impact while maintaining performance. As the world becomes increasingly dependent on digital infrastructure, research like CoolSmart AI has the potential to meaningfully reduce the carbon footprint of the technology industry and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The project first competed at the Hudson County STEM Showcase, where it earned a Platinum Award, placing in the top 4 out of over 500 entries in the senior division, the largest participant count ever recorded in the competition. The project also received the Yale Science and Engineering Association Award at the regional level before advancing to ISEF.
At ISEF, Aashirya earned First Place from the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), a special award recognizing outstanding work in the field of AI. Along with the award came prize money and a AAAI Library Membership extended to all McNair students, a resource that gives the school community access to leading AI research and publications.
In the spirit of giving back, Aashirya also donated a portion of her prize money to McNair's Research Club.
